JOB OVERVIEW

  • CLASSIFICATION: EXEMPT

The Area Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of East Coast bakeries (7 locations) and managers, and is responsible for supporting, managing and developing bakery team members to exceed business goals. In this role, the Area Manager will be a leader of leaders, responsible for developing the management and hourly team into best in class operators, ensuring execution of strategies to drive results and to manage change and ultimately, to effectively drive operational excellence and strong financial performance.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Operations & Sales

  • Responsible for the financial performance of the Retail Operations lines on our P&L including Revenue, Labor, Waste and COGS. Have full awareness and a proactive approach of managing actuals vs target

    • Monitor actual sales vs. budget and take effective action to correct unfavorable sales trends

    • Manage costs including labor, COGS, waste and controllables

    • Hold Bakery managers accountable to budget and financial metrics.

  • Conduct frequent visits to the bakeries to provide feedback around service, operations, inventory management and more.

  • Follow up on voids, discounts, cash discrepancies and any financial inconsistencies.

  • Ensure effective inventory management processes in place from the Bakeries

  • Develop strong cross-functional partnerships with supply chain, food safety, marketing / creative and finance that ensures adequate support is provided to the bakery to improve performance and remove barriers to allow for team members to focus on the customer, people, and results.

  • Effectively integrate new operating programs with core work methods, tools, and training

  • Comply and enforce DOH regulations and Milk Bar GMP standards when performing cleaning tasks, preparing food and beverages, and working behind the counter.

  • Review and ensure completion of daily checklists by management, including but not limited to: temperature logs, FIFO, soft serve, deep clean tasks and AM / PM checklists.

Human Resources and Talent Development

  • Drive continuous performance improvement when it comes to team development, culture and, ultimately, financial performance

    • Identify, recruit and develop high-quality talent for management and bakery hourly staff.

    • Lead management development and succession planning for assigned group of managers

    • Provide ongoing feedback with clear performance expectations to instill a deep sense of management accountability and ownership at the bakeries for best in class performance

  • Participate in annual performance reviews as well as progressive disciplinary action for management as well as hourly staff at your designated locations

  • Responsible for hiring, training and developing management personnel as well as focusing on talent acquisition and retention strategies for hourly staff.

  • Oversee execution of payroll and scheduling for multiple locations. Anticipate schedule changes based on bakery needs and seasonality, and ensure all staffing needs are met while meeting and exceeding the budget.

  • Support management with attendance issues, call outs, latenesses and other business disruptions.

  • Schedule and maintain weekly 1:1s with management -- with a focus on in-store and in-person connections with the teams that provide real time feedback and support to the operations.

  • Maintain 100% compliance with all relevant policies, EEO, labor, HR, wage and food safety laws, permits and regulations.

Customer Service

  • Ensure smooth day to day operations of designated locations. Foster and promote a strong work culture and #MilkBarLife, and uphold brand service standards.

    • Coach, guide and support team to provide exceptional customer experience.

    • Maintain brand identity in all interactions. Assure that managers address and resolve all customer issues as they happen

  • Fully understand and exhibit the Milk Bar ethos, embody our core values, inspire celebration, and create real magic. Serve as a brand ambassador both internally and externally

  • Monitor, measure, respond and correct any incorrect customer interactions with designated locations.

  • Support bakery managers with troubleshooting of POS platforms and Third Party Delivery services as needed.

SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS

  • 7+ years of management of retail storefront(s), with minimum of 3+ years in multi-unit managerial experience w/ experience leading teams of 3 or greater, preferably in the hospitality or food industry.

  • Strong focus on people development and employee relations.

  • Proven ability to prioritize within a fast paced environment -- ability to solve problems independently and delegate as needed.

  • Active on their feet and able to lift up to 25 lbs.

  • Periodic travel, based on needs in other markets or with partner stores.

  • Flexibility based on the business needs, including weekends, holidays and a variety of shifts.

  • Food handler card required (Food Protection Certificate in NYC).

  • Strong leadership, decision making and multitasking skills.

  • Self starter. Able to observe what needs to be changed and execute against it.

  • Strong communication skills with peers as well as senior management.

  • Passion for food, sweets and coffee - big plus.

  • Ability to build relationships and embrace change

  • Regular in-person attendance is an essential function and requirement of this position.
